I began this website/blog in the summer of 2011. Back then it was called Here, There Are Dragons. Coming to the web party as late as I did, all the cool domain names had been snapped up; at least, those that I considered cool. Desperate for inspiration, I surfed the Internet clicking on anything that looked promising. Among the hordes of LOLcats, quotations, endless games of Freecell (I get distracted easily), and insipid Yahoo! articles (thank God I hadn't discovered Pinterest or you wouldn't be reading this), I learned that in medieval times, cartographers drew dragons on maps and charts so that travelers would know that what lay beyond was unfamiliar and possibly perilous. These days, instead of dragons, cartographers would write something like this on their maps:
...or this:
...or maybe this:
I liked how this bit of trivia tied in with my feelings at the time; those nervy jitters that root around in your gut when you are determined to undertake some crazy, hare-brained scheme, like bungee jumping, or maybe blogging, and you don't know how it's going to turn out. Up to that point, the closest I had ever come to blogging was a diary I kept in junior high, an endeavor that lasted only a few weeks once I realized how crashingly boring my life really was. Blogging, for me, was the equivalent of taking off on a journey with a map peppered with tiny dragons for guidance, and so, that was how my blog, in its original embodiment, wound up with a dragon theme. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Several months and 40+ posts later, I decided I was due for an overhaul. No, I did not have head-to-toe plastic surgery, although that is a very good idea. What needed an overhaul was my website --- I was sick of dragons. Once again, I needed a theme, and this time I knew what I wanted.
I have always loved to read quotations, those pithy observations on the human condition, and signs are just a natural extension of that. Our backyard used to be decked out with old signs scoured from flea markets, antique shops, eBay and, dare I say it? one I stole in broad daylight from a city park. My one and only walk on the dark side, unless you count the time I filched a package of Chiclets when I was eight, which my mean mother made me return.
Signs on the Side of the Road is my journey, complete with u-turns, detours, and the occasional dead end when I temporarily run out of creative gas. I hope you enjoy the trip with me.
